Perception of edges versus areas by the crab Carcinus.

چکیده

The previous paper (Horridge, 1966) showed that a crab gives a directional eyestalk response to a striped drum which has been moved during a dark period. The crab's ability to do this shows that the former position of the stripes is remembered in some way for many minutes in the dark and is correlated with the new position on reillumination. In that paper two aspects were omitted for simplicity. It was assumed that the crab perceives the stripes much as we do as areas of black and white, and that eye tremor can be ignored. In the present account it will be shown that neither of these assumptions is justified, and that both must be modified by one new fact, that eye tremor accentuates the perception of edges.

Spontaneous alternation in marine crabs: invasive versus native species.

Organisms ranging from paramecia to humans tend to explore places that have been least recently explored, which is referred to as spontaneous alternation. Although organisms rely on different sources of information in alternating between places, the emergent behavioral pattern is likely advantageous during exploration and foraging. Under this rationale, continuous spontaneous alternation perfor...

Predation: a causal mechanism for variability in intertidal bivalve populations

Two caging experiments were conducted on an intertidal mudflat to assess the impact of predation on two species of bivalves; Macoma balthica and Cerastoderma edule. The first caging 2 experiment enclosed the shore crab, Carcinus maenas, carapace width 15–25 mm, in 1-m cages. The three treatments were zero Carcinus (control), five Carcinus (the highest natural densities found at this site) and 2...

Investigating mitigation of juvenile European green crab Carcinus maenas from seed mussels to prevent transfer during Newfoundland mussel aquaculture operations

The mussel aquaculture industry has raised concerns following the discovery of green crab Carcinus maenas in Placentia Bay Newfoundland in August 2007. Post-larval green crabs have been found in feral mussel beds in high densities in Europe. If this is true for other green crab populations, mussel seed transfers from Placentia Bay could provide a vector for post-larval juvenile crab transfer to...

Green Crab (Carcinus maenas) Foraging Efficiency Reduced by Fast Flows

Predators can strongly influence prey populations and the structure and function of ecosystems, but these effects can be modified by environmental stress. For example, fluid velocity and turbulence can alter the impact of predators by limiting their environmental range and altering their foraging ability. We investigated how hydrodynamics affected the foraging behavior of the green crab (Carcin...

Experimental evidence for latent developmental plasticity: intertidal whelks respond to a native but not an introduced predator.

Animals with highly inducible traits may show no inducible response when exposed to a related but wholly novel cue. This appears to be true for the intertidal whelk Nucella lamellosa faced with a voracious introduced predator. In the laboratory, we exposed whelks to effluent from two species of predatory crab, the native red rock crab Cancer productus and the invasive European green crab Carcin...
